Child life jacket: how to choose the right life jacket for your little one?

by Milk Bar on Jun 12 2025
Safety and fun go hand in hand when you take small children to the water. Whether it's a day at the beach, a swimming pool, or a vacation by a lake – a good life jacket is indispensable for little ones who cannot swim independently yet. But how do you choose the right one life jacket for your child? In this blog, you will discover what to look for to make a safe and comfortable choice. Why a life jacket is important for children Swimming vests are specially designed to keep young children afloat while allowing them to move freely. Unlike inflatable armbands or a simple swim ring, a swimming vest offers more stability and support — without restricting freedom of movement. A children's life jacket is ideal for toddlers and preschoolers those who want to fully explore in the water but are not yet able to float independently. 1. Choose the right size: weight and age Swimming vests are available in various sizes, based on your child's weight and age. A proper fit is crucial for both safety and comfort. Pay attention to the weight, not only on the age. A jacket that is too large can shift, a jacket that is too small pinches or restricts movement. Always choose a life jacket that is tailored to your child's body weight. 2. Fit and safety: what you need to pay attention to A well-fitting life jacket should fit snugly without being too tight. These are important features: Crotch strap: prevents the vest from riding up in the water. Essential for the little ones. Especially for toddlers from 1 year old, a sturdy life jacket with leg straps and a good closure is essential. Good closures: such as buckles or zippers, for a secure and comfortable fit. Soft lining: to prevent skin irritation.   3. Buoyancy and removable elements Not every life jacket has the same buoyancy. Some vests contain fixed foam filling, others have removable floats with which you can gradually adjust the buoyancy. 💡 Swimming vests with removable padding are ideal for children learning to swim: you reduce the buoyancy as they become more confident in the water. 4. Choose certified life jackets For maximum safety, choose a children's life jacket that complies with European safety standards (such as CE marking or EN13138). Avoid cheap, unapproved vests. Instead, invest in a quality brand specifically designed for young children. 5. Life jacket ≠ life vest A life jacket is intended as a thruster, not as a full-fledged rescue device. It is therefore not a substitute for active supervision by an adult. Let your child never alone in or around the water, not even with a cardigan on. Frequently Asked Questions about Children's Life Jackets From what age can my child wear a life jacket? Usually from 1 year, depending on the weight. Always refer to the manufacturer's guidelines. Is it okay for my child to swim wearing only a life jacket? A life jacket helps to float, but never replaces swimming lessons or parental supervision. Always use it in combination with the presence of an adult. What is the difference between a buoyancy suit and a life jacket? A float suit resembles a swimsuit with built-in floats but has less buoyancy and is less adjustable than a life jacket. Summary: what to look for when choosing a child's life jacket? ✔ Weight category of your child✔ Crotch strap (for the little ones) ✔ Removable floats or fixed filling✔ Soft materials and good fit✔ European safety standards (CE, EN13138) Discover here our collection of life jackets.

How do you choose the right little sunglasses for your child?

by Milk Bar on Jun 02 2025
The sun is shining, temperatures are rising, and you're all set for trips to the park, the beach, or the playground. But aren't you forgetting something important? Your child's eyes deserve just as much protection from the sun as their skin. A good pair of children's sunglasses is therefore not an unnecessary luxury. In this blog, we explain what to look for when choosing the perfect pair of sunglasses for your child. 1. A good UV protection is a must Children's eyes are especially sensitive to UV radiation. The natural protection of their eyes is not yet fully developed. Always choose sunglasses that a goodUV protection offers. Check the label to see if the CE mark is mentioned, preferably with category 3 or 4lenses. 2. The right fit for comfort and safety A pair of sunglasses must fit well. Not too tight, but certainly not too loose either. Glasses that slip down or constantly fall off will quickly make your child not want to wear them anymore. Note: The glasses must fit well on the face. Choose a lightweight frame. For babies, models with a flexible strap are ideal. For toddlers and preschoolers, flexible and adjustable legs are recommended.    3. Unbreakable glasses and frame Children are active, curious, and... not always very careful. That's why choose sunglasses withunbreakable glasses and a flexible, sturdy frame . This way, you don't have to worry while playing in the sun. 4. Age and style: playful and functional The appearance also plays a role in sunglasses for children. If they like the glasses, they will wear them more often. So choose a color or shape that fits their personality. For babies up to 1 year old, there are special models, while older children can already handle more "adult models." Tip: let your child choose from a few safe options themselves. This way, you make it a fun moment! 5. Choose quality from reliable brands Invest in a good pair of sunglasses from a reliable brand specially designed for children. Brands such as Béabaare known for their child-friendly design and high UV protection.  Finally: from what age should a child wear sunglasses? As soon as your child goes outside with you, it's time to protect their eyes. This can be done from just a few months old. Especially on sunny days or during the summer, sunglasses are essential, particularly at the beach or in the mountains where UV radiation is even more intense. Why do babies put everything in their mouth? | Development, senses, and tips for parents

by Milk Bar on May 09 2025
When your baby grabs something for the first time, there’s a good chance the object will end up in their mouth within a second. A block, a cloth, a stuffed animal… everything seems to have the final destination “mouth.” But why do babies actually do this? And should you be worried? In this blog, we explain why babies put everything in their mouths, what this says about their development, and how you as a parent can handle this safely. The mouth as the first 'discovery instrument' Between 3 and 7 months, your baby enters what is called themouth phase: an important developmental phase in which your baby learns about the world through the mouth. Babies initially cannot see well, grasp, or analyze with their hands like adults do. What they can do? Taste, suck, and feel with their lips, tongue, and gums. The mouth is at that moment the most sensitive sense and helps your baby gather information about: Temperature Texture (soft, hard, smooth, rough…) Size and shape Whether something is edible or safe So no, it is not a "bad habit" – it is a completely natural and even essential part of the sensory and motor developmentof your child. Is it dangerous that babies put everything in their mouths? In principle not, as long as the itemssafe, clean and suitable for their age . Think of teething toys, soft cuddly toys, silicone rings, or fabric books. However, as a parent, you need to be alert for: Small items(choking hazard) Sharp edges Batteries and magnets – life-threatening Toxic materialslike paint or plastic without a quality mark 💡 Safety tip: choose products with a CE certification ( in accordance with EU regulations) and avoid anything smaller than a ping pong ball. The importance of teething toys During the oral phase and especially when the teeth are coming through, can teething toys provide lighting. These are specially designed to suck or chew on, without causing damage to gums or teeth. You can find them in all kinds of shapes: from silicone figures to cooling elements that you place in the refrigerator. A softplay matWith bite-friendly toys nearby is the ideal combo: your baby lies comfortably and can safely experiment with grabbing and tasting. When does it stop? The peak of the oral phase is between 6 and 12 months. Around the first year of life, babies also start to explore more with their hands and eyes, but the oral use does not disappear immediately. Some children continue to like putting things in their mouths even after that – that is normal. What can you do as a parent? Give your baby toys that are made for chewing. Ensure a safe play environment , such as a defined play mat without small objects. Check out our blog about a safe play environment. Let your baby explore, but stay close by. Remove unsafe objects such as keys, coins, or plastic packaging.

How to Handle the Time Change from Winter Time to Summer Time for Babies and Children? Tips for an Easier Transition

by Milk Bar on Mar 24 2025
Summer is approaching, and that means we will soon have to change the clock for the time switch. For adults, this can be a bit inconvenient, but for your baby or young child, it can be a bigger challenge. Fortunately, there are several ways to make the time change easier for your little one. In this blog, we provide handy tips to help your baby adjust to the new time, so that you all have a smooth transition. Why is the Hour Change Difficult for Babies? Babies and toddlers often have a fixed sleep routine that is closely linked to their internal clock. The time change can cause your baby to become temporarily confused, making it harder for them to fall asleep or causing them to wake up earlier than usual. This can be very tiring for both you and your baby/toddler, but with some patience and planning, you can make this transition easier. Tip 1: Gradually adjust the sleep times One of the best ways to help your baby or child adjust to the new time is by gradually adjusting their sleep schedule. Start a few days before the time change by shifting your baby's bedtime by about 10-15 minutes each day. This gives your baby time to slowly acclimate to the new time, without it being a big shock to their system. Tip 2: Ensure a consistent bedtime routine Babies and toddlers thrive on consistency, so it's important to keep the bedtime routine as stable as possible. Whether you read a story, sing a lullaby, or use a special cuddle toy, maintain the routine as always. This helps your baby/child make the transition easier and feel safe and secure, even when the clock says otherwise. Tip 3: Pay attention to the Day and Night rhythm Make sure your baby/child gets enough natural light during the day, especially in the morning. Natural light helps your baby's internal clock adjust to the new time. On the other hand, try to dim the lights in the evening and create a calm and quiet environment so your baby can signal that it's time to sleep. Tip 4: Change the Meal Plans Gradually If your baby or child is on a fixed feeding schedule, the time change can also affect when he/she gets hungry. It is helpful to gradually adjust this schedule so that the feeding times slowly align with the new time. This can ensure that your baby/child eats at the right times and adapts more easily to the change. Tip 5: Ensure the Right Sleep Environment A comfortable sleeping environment is essential for your baby's good night's sleep. Make sure that your baby's crib or bassinet has the right temperature and that there is not too much light or noise.  Conclusion The hour change doesn't have to be a stressful event for you or your baby/child. By gradually adjusting sleep times, maintaining the right bedtime routine, and ensuring a comfortable sleep environment, your baby can smoothly adapt to the new time.

How do you put Your Baby to Sleep Safely?

by Milk Bar on Dec 06 2024
We notice that there are still many questions regarding veilig slapen for babies. The advice has changed significantly across different generations. We, at Milk Bar, naturally consider safety our top priority, so here is a brief explanation of the current guidelines regarding safe sleeping. 1. I lay my baby on their back On the sleeping on the back is safest for your baby. If your baby cannot yet roll over by themselves, sleeping on the side or stomach is dangerous. Even with a ventilated mattress, sleeping on the back is the safest. As soon as your baby can easily roll from tummy to back, tummy sleeping is okay. 2. My baby sleeps in his own bed or cradle Although it is tempting to take your baby into your bed during a difficult night, this is not safe. There are several dangerous situations possible if your baby sleeps in bed with you: he/she can get trapped, he/she can overheat due to the down comforter, you can roll onto him, he/she can roll face-first into the pillow and therefore have difficulty breathing properly. Het mattress for the crib or bassinet must be firm, fit well (no space between the mattress and the crib). It is, however, recommended to let your baby sleep in a crib or bassinet next to your bed for the first 6 months. 3. Sleeping in a sleeping bag Een sleeping bag is everything your baby needs to sleep safely and well. Your baby's head cannot get under the bedding this way. Een in-baby-sleeping-bag is a good idea as long as your baby cannot roll over yet, after that a regular sleeping bag is recommended. These are available for every season. The TOG value of the sleeping bag indicates how warm the sleeping bag is (the higher the value, the warmer). A sleeping bag has even more advantages: Your baby cannot end up uncovered, and they cannot climb out of bed as easily. Babies who are used to sleeping in a sleeping bag often quickly know that it's bedtime when you put on the sleeping bag. After some fussing, they calm down. 4. My baby sleeps in an empty crib No pillow, no cuddles, no blankets, no baby nests, nor bed bumpers. Een klein comfort blanket is fine. 5. Safety above all: a few more tips Do not smoke in the room or near your baby. Ventilate the baby's room every day. Do not place the crib next to the heater. Be careful with medication if you are breastfeeding. One pacifier is a good idea: babies are less likely to lie with their nose and mouth on the mattress, the sucking keeps the airways clear. Gradually wean off the pacifier from 10 months. Info: guidelines regarding safe sleeping and sudden infant death syndrome safety NL, Child and Family Belgium
