Magna Tiles vs Connetix - the best magnetic tiles
Connetix vs Magna-Tiles: Which magnetic tiles should you choose?
Let me get straight to the point: magnetic tiles have been the most-played-with toy in our home for years. If I could give parents of young children just one toy tip? It would without a doubt be magnetic tiles. No comparison.
They’re never put away in a toy rotation here and stay in the play corner every single day. From building to imaginative play, from color sorting to experimenting with light and shadow – they’re so open-ended that children of different ages can keep finding new ways to play with them.
In this blog, I compare two popular brands: Connetix and Magna-Tiles. That way, you can make an informed choice.
What do we have at home?
Our collection consists of:
-
100-piece Magna-Tiles set
-
62-piece Connetix set
The nice thing? These brands are compatible with each other and work together without any problems while building.

Differences between Connetix and Magna-Tiles
1. Magnet size
Magna-Tiles have noticeably smaller magnets than Connetix. You especially notice this with larger builds: bigger magnets often provide just a bit more stability.
2. Magnet strength & durability
Connetix is known for its strong magnets and sturdy finish. Magna-Tiles are high quality too, but in direct comparison Connetix tiles often feel a little more robust.
3. Design & appearance
This may be the biggest difference:
-
Connetix has a bright, transparent look without visible support lines in the middle.
-
Magna-Tiles have internal bracing that is visible.
Some parents wonder: Is Connetix less sturdy because it doesn’t have visible bracing?
The answer is no. Thanks to the unique beveled design, they stay strong and durable.

Light & shadow: the aesthetic difference
Personally, I think:
-
Indoors or in darker spaces: Connetix are beautiful, because they let so much light through.
-
Outdoors or by a window in sunlight: Tiles with lines (like Magna-Tiles) create interesting shadow effects.
Combine different brands? Then you get surprising compositions that invite observation and conversation – ideal for older children.
At what age are magnetic tiles suitable?
Many parents ask:
1. Can my baby play with them?
From around 8–12 months, children can already discover the magnetic effect: pulling two tiles apart and clicking them back together.
Around 15–18 months, they often start adding pieces to existing constructions.
2. Are they safe?
With quality brands like Connetix and Magna-Tiles, the magnets are securely enclosed. In our experience, they are safe with normal use. Of course, supervision remains important for young children.
How many tiles do you need?
Honestly?
If you have the budget, I recommend at least 100 pieces — even for one child.
More pieces mean:
-
Bigger builds
-
More creativity
-
Less frustration
-
Longer playtime
You can start with 60 tiles, but the play becomes much richer with a larger set.
Are they also suitable for older children (6–8 years)?
Absolutely. Older children often use them for:
-
Complex constructions
-
Marble runs
-
Combinations with other building materials
-
Creative light projects
And honestly? Even adults enjoy them 😉
My honest opinion: Connetix or Magna-Tiles?
Both are quality choices.
Choose Connetix if you:
-
Like a modern, clear look
-
Work a lot with light
-
Value extra-strong magnets
Choose Magna-Tiles if you:
-
Prefer the classic look with visible bracing
-
Already have an existing collection
-
Are looking for a reliable, established option
Whichever you choose: magnetic tiles are an investment that children will enjoy for years.
