How does Santa know who's been good? Scout elves fly to the North Pole every night in the weeks before Christmas to report to Santa. The next morning, they return to the family and hide somewhere else in the house. Can the Elf on the Shelf stay with the family all year round? After the holidays, the scout elves must return to the North Pole to start preparing for Christmas the following year. Once back at the North Pole, they share their stories with the other elves, practice flying, and help Santa and his wife. On special occasions, Santa gives the elves permission to return to the family's home for a while during the year. According to tradition, a scout elf loses its magic if touched by human hands. However, while safely inside the gift box, it can be moved as usual. Once the elf has been adopted and given a name, it must not be touched.
